The War of Art

The Doodler Says...

As odd it is can be to analyze your own work, I’ll try and live with it. This piece, part I of II, is one of my most popular (which speaks largely to the content of Steven Pressfield’s masterful book) and it has the following things going for it: the intentional use of black and white for the stark subject matter, the use of frames for distinguishing unique pieces of content, simple iconography to visualize the core of each message, variations in typography, and a non-hierarchical placement of equally-relevant points. It’s a smart piece because it’s a visual summary of a book that many of us want to remember but can’t re-read every day. So the image serves as daily bread that hits you right in the gut (I guess it’s more like a hard baguette). I used calligraphic pens on real paper (in this day and age?!) and drew both of The War of Art pieces in one sitting with no pencils, no erasers and no white out. It was a war of art, you see, so it required taking no prisoners. If you’d like to read my interview with Steven Pressfield, the author of several stunning bestsellers, then onward to his Creative Series post.
