When you hang out with a legend in Vegas, you bet you go big. And the more people you can inspire to join in, the better.
That was the fuel for this year’s installation with Clay Lacy Aviation at the 2017 NBAA Business Aviation Conference Exhibition. Our high-flying idea: to engage visitors to the booth in a way that got them thinking of how “Legendary” translates to the every day, on a very personal level.
Why “Legendary”? As a regular reader of this blog (right?!) you may remember last year’s epic mural featuring the ongoing legacy of Clay Lacy himself: the man, his accomplishments, and the founding of the first-ever executive jet charter company in the Western United States. (Check it out: Up, up , and away with Clay Lacy Aviation, right here.)
Having focused on the Clay Lacy story, the team wanted to turn the spotlight on everyone else. As a people-centric company, they know “legendary” is in individual stories — the day-to-day inspiration to do better, reach higher, go further. We wanted to capture that spirit in a way that would capture attention, and give people a space to share in a big way. Specifically, on an 8-foot by 15-foot wall.
The wall packed the punch of a strong Be Legendary visual, with two prompts for folks to consider. One, “What is your Legendary Commitment, in Seven Words”, was inspired by Clay Lacy Aviation’s own seven word mission of “Great People Providing a Legendary Aviation Experience”. The other, “What Inspires You to Be Legendary”, ended up with answers ranging from “God” to “Beer” — and just about everything you can imagine in between. With a little explanation of what we were up to, a pile of Post-It notes, and fistfuls of Sharpies, we found attendees of the show to be more than willing to add their answers. (Pro-tip: it helped to have a sweet “Legendary” t-shirt as a thank you for contributing!)
The result: a literal mosaic of inspiration that grew over the course of the conference. The wall itself sparked curiosity, creativity, and conversation — and allowed people to connect in a way they might not typically at an event like NBAA-BACE. What started as an installation turned into a real communal experience, and exceeded even our expectations for a different kind of engagement.
As for next year — stay tuned. Clay Lacy Aviation turns 50, and we’ve got a big wall to fill.
