Negotiation Tool – The Grove

The infographic you see above was made in 2005 (I was a young info-design grasshopper then) and I used it as a negotiation tool during my performance review at The Grove Consultants International. At a typical company, an employee wouldn’t use a visualization method to indicate their value and contribution to the company. But this was, of course, The Grove and it made sense to me to speak to them using their language – namely, visual language. This was one of my first efforts at describing something visually (you can see it resembles a mindmap in its format) and it was very useful in helping me to remember the projects I managed, the departments I interfaced with, and the revenue I brought in. It also helped paint a picture for the higher-ups as to what my role was since it is so rare for people who don’t work with you on a daily basis to be aware of what you do. Last, I think it impressed them that I had put so much thought into the conversation. I recommend this method to anyone looking to be appreciated. Of course, you have to actually be DOING something worthwhile to visualize. But I’m sure you are.
